The Mercedes S-Class defines luxury and manages to stay just a step ahead of its competition since its inception. While it has made its mark in the sedan segment, Mercedes did not really have a luxury convertible in its already elaborate portfolio except for the dated SL series. And that was the inception of the Mercedes S-Coupe – the S-Class of coupes.
The S-Coupe fascia has the essentials from the S-Class, the headlamps and the grille. While the headlamps have been carried forward, the grille has been revised to look more pronounced and sporty with the single horizontal chrome embezzled slat. The bumper is busy with the three part air dam and the mesh grille lending the sporty touches. The long hood gives the S-Coupe its character while the sloping roofline of the convertible brings elegance to the design. The elongated LED tail lamps blend into the tail which ends almost at the rear wheels with minimal overhang.
As we said, it is the S-Class of the coupes and hence luxury is a given. The interior is dressed up in fine leather and the cabin feels exquisite. The regular run of the mill individual zone climate control, power seats, power adjustable steering wheel, cruise control, a classy sounding music system are all there. The roof opens and closes electrically at speeds up to 50kmph. Ventilated seats are standard. You have a safety net of eight airbags and an exhaustive electronic stability program to keep the occupants as safe as possible.
The S-Coupe comes with two engine options – the S500 and the S63 AMG. The S500 is powered by a 4663cc petrol V8 that churns out 455bhp of power at 5250rpm and 700Nm of torque from 1800rpm thanks to the turbocharging. And if this isn’t enough, you can opt for the 5.5-litre bi-turbo V8 that develops a whopping 577bhp of power and 900Nm of torque. While both the cars come with a seven-speed automatic gearbox, the S500 gets all-wheel-drive and the S63 AMG gets rear-wheel-drive.
The S-Coupe attempts to offer luxury open-to-air motoring like the Bentley Continental GTC or the Rolls-Royce Dawn but at a league under the marques.
